Audrey and Noah get it.
They accept that Jesus was born in a stable surrounded by sheep and cows and goats because there was no room at the inn. They know that a star came to rest over the birth place of our Lord and that angels and shepherds came to worship the newborn king. That three wise men came bearing gifts for the baby seems as natural to them as Santa bringing their gifts this Christmas morning. They also realize that Mary was the perfect mother for Jesus and that Joseph made sure his son was safe. And even more importantly, they have an innate sense that this baby Jesus is special and that it is important that we celebrate His birthday today.
Audrey and Noah are my grandchildren. They are just two and four years old.
Small children don’t know about power and pride. They’ve never heard about revolutions and war, about hedge funds and tax shelters. They don’t use Twitter or Facebook to communicate or Google to search for meaning.
Small children get it. They welcome Jesus at Christmas openly because theirs is a world of humility, trust and unconditional love. They don’t carry hammers and nails like so many who crucify the Lord. Rather they carry hope, laughter and song.
Their eyes are clear, their vision is perfect.
Children help us to see God’s heart this Christmas day.
