One of my favourite books is called Outliers, The Story of Success by Malcolm Gladwell. It is a fascinating and provocative look at the underlying reasons why some people excel in life. The book (and now I’m quoting from the jacket cover) explains what the Beatles and Bill Gates have in common, the extraordinary success of Asians at math, the hidden advantage of star athletes and why all top New York lawyers have the same resume. The lives of outliers, those people whose achievements fall outside normal experience, follow a peculiar and unexpected logic that Gladwell exposes brilliantly.
Gladwell book is most insightful and yet I wonder if excelling in life like Steve Jobs has anything to do with happiness and successful living.
I’d like you to listen to a brief talk given by Randy Pausch on Oprah a few years ago.
He talks about excelling in life too. A cancer victim, Pausch speaks about the keys to living your life well. His is the story of a truly courageous outlier.
