Malheureusement, mon ami Jacques is in the midst of his own cancer struggle. Testing in the last few weeks has confirmed that he has a significant gastrointestinal tumour that requires immediate attention.
Intermittent pain on his right side and stomach discomfort were the harbingers of this apparent malignancy back in January. Of late, he’s been taking strong pain killers for the discomfort which has become much more frequent and intense.
Yesterday, I accompanied him to see a surgeon at Toronto General Hospital to discuss his condition.
After a firm introductory handshake, Dr.Greig’s first words were,
“I think I can help you.”
Then, in Karnak-like fashion, he added,
“The answer to your question is May 22.”
With that, he excused himself to take an urgent call leaving Jacques and I smiling quizzically at each other. Indeed, he had answered Jacques first question about when his surgery would take place.
Thirty minutes later, the doctor reappeared with all the other answers to Jacques’ remaining questions. No, the tumour doesn’t appear to have spread to any organs; yes, it’s major surgery and will take about four hours; yes, you’ll be in hospital for about 7 to 10 days for recovery; no, you don’t have to modify your diet; and yes, you may require some chemotherapy post-op.
We were both impressed by Dr. Greig’s wealth of expertise, his attention to detail and his reassuring manner. Throughout his journey to date, Jacques remarked that he has been cared for by doctors whose professionalism has been a source of consolation and great hope.
As we were about to leave, the doctor added confidently, “In three months time sir, you’ll be out golfing again.”
Karnak didn’t realize that Jacques doesn’t know a divot from a bogey but as we left the hospital, Jacques’ confidence had been restored. In fact, on the way home, he seemed more concerned about when to plant his tomatoes than the timing of his operation.
Certainly, he will need the help and support of family and friends over the next few months. The fact that he has nine siblings is such a wonderful blessing at a time like this.
If you feel like dropping him a note of encouragement, his e-mail address is jcarron@execulink.com
And the God of all grace….after you have suffered a little while,
will Himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.
will Himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.
To Him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.
