A GOTHAM CITY CRUSADER

An e-mail from a former student came on the heels of my blog entry about the Bill Gates vs Mother Teresa. I know it wasn’t a coincidence.

Patrick Ma graduated from Brebeuf College back in 2000. He was an outstanding student who loved the challenge of academic work and who on took on the role of student council president in his final year at the school with charisma and confidence.

He was writing to wish me well and catching me up on his current status.

Patrick is now the Director of Operations for the United Way in New York City where he manages the operations, analytics, and research functions within the fundraising department. It sounds like a challenging job but one well suited for a person who studied for an MBA at Yale in 2006.

He adds, “I’m happy with the direction of my career and intend to continue in the non-profit space. I left finance in 2008 before it was fashionable to do so and I’ve had a blast ever since!”

Talk about taking up a career that emphasizes the compassion quotient. It’s no wonder Patrick finds his job so satisfying as he tries to make a difference for others.

It’s also nice to report that Patrick is engaged to an American girl who is also employed in the non-profit sector. They plan to marry at Disney World in the fall.

Nothing about this young man surprises me. Know that I am very proud of your achievements Patrick.

Well, actually, one thing does astonish about this dynamo.

Thanks to the encouragement of high school mentor Paul Solarski, Patrick is now a long distance runner who plans to take part in his fourth marathon this May. For a guy who considered it exercise to walk down a flight of stairs to buy a donut in the school cafeteria back in the day, I’d say that’s quite a turn around.

Gotham City is lucky to have you Patrick. Know that Batman needs all the help he can get.

“A hero can be anyone, even a man doing something as simple
and reassuring as putting a coat around a young boy’s shoulders to
let him know the world hadn’t ended.”
