MERE CHRISTIANITY PART 3

In case you haven't noticed, I've become a huge fan of C.S. Lewis.

Not only because he appeals to my rational Columbo side but also because he sees things from the top of the mountain, a la Malcolm Gladwell.

His book Mere Christianity is "the ideal persuader for the half-convinced, for the good man who would like to a a Christian but finds his intellect getting in the way." At least, that's what the cover jacket says.

I am particularly fascinated by Lewis's extrapolation from our present behaviours to our place in eternity.

Lewis surmises that our negative behaviours send out ripples that last forever. I think our positive interactions do exactly the same thing.

He explains that "what really matters is those little marks or twists on the central, inside part of the soul which are going to turn it, in the long run, into a heavenly or hellish creature..... Each of us at each moment is progressing to the one state or the other."

His insight renders much more significant the decision to help a friend or help ourselves, to help build a sand castle or let the waves wash it away.

Or to quote my new mentor,

"This world is a great sculptor's shop. We are the statues and there is a rumour going around the shop that some of us are some day going to come to life."

Indeed, Pinocchio may become a real boy!

If that metaphor seems a bit wooden, let Katy Perry's optimism inspire you....

Do you know that there's still a chance for you
Cause there's a spark in you.
You just gotta ignite the light and let it shine
Like the Fourth of July 'Cause baby you're a firework.'
