SUMMER HOLIDAYS 2016

Just back from a week long vacation at Georgian Bay with our children and grandchildren. It was a time to catch up on some family stories and more than a few knock knock jokes, a time for playing frisbee in the water and volleyball on shore, and a time for lots of outdoor cuisine including Perky's fish and chips followed up by ice cream...Yikes!

All in all, it was an opportunity to come together as a family and celebrate some old traditions like charred hot dogs, sand castles and dominoes as well as instituting new ones like serving popcorn to the grandkids for breakfast one morning. Not admirable grandparenting but it sure was a hit with the children.

Being around my four grandchildren always brings a smile to my face.

After a few hours in the water one afternoon, I remarked to six year old Audrey,

"Look, your skin is all wrinkly now."

"Papa," she replied, "your skin is always wrinkly."

Touche!

Three year Vivian celebrated her birthday during our holiday week. When I asked her how old she was going to be, she could only answer, "After two." Though she may not turn into a math major, her underwater antics bode well for her chances of making Canada's 2032 Olympic swim team.

Her five year old sister Isla was happy that Vivi's no longer a baby.

"Anyone before the age of three is a tobbler," she said. "In French, they call that a tomblant."

She had me believing that tomblant was real French word until her mother revealed that Isla has the habit of making up her own French words at times.

And finally, I had a chance to teach eight year old Noah a few new card games as well as how to make a flying saucer out of popsicle sticks. He seemed to especially enjoy his morning pancake breakfast with his cousins.

"Papa," he said, as I passed him some syrup. "Could I please have a fork? I haven't needed one on this holiday til now."

Four days in and he hadn't used a fork.

Now that's what I call a real holiday.
