MY 2017 HERO

I'm turning into morning man!

Seems that my knee problem has come with a timer set to go off at 6.00 am every morning. Night man certainly doesn't like an early riser but a cup of coffee and time watching SportsCentre quickly dispatches him from the scene.

On Sunday, I awoke in time to watch most of the Federer Nadal Australian Open final. It was a marvelous match and I was pleased that Federer came through with a brilliant finish.

However what transpired after the match was even more inspiring.

After accepting his championship trophy in front of a large crowd, Federer spoke these words to his opponent, Rafael Nadal.

"....and here we stand in the finals. I'm happy for you. I would have been happy to lose too to be honest, the comeback was perfect as it was. Tennis is a tough sport. There's no draws but if there was going to be one, I'd would have been very happy to accept the draw tonight and share it with Rafa, really."

Wow!

And here I thought that sport was all about crushing your opponent, that winners create losers, that competition and compassion don't co-exist on a tennis court.

Federer's remarks speak volumes about his humility and his wisdom as well as his understanding that what's important is not winning or losing but rather playing the game to the best of one's ability and at the same time, wishing the best for others along the way.

Thank you for your insights Roger and congratulations on your richly deserved victory at the Australian Open.
