STILL LEARNING

Comedian Red Skelton once said that he embraced every day as a chance to learn at least one new thing.

A very laudable goal indeed.

Along those lines, I think one of my goals is to see the humour in life in at least one situation every day.

Spending time with our two granddaughters last week in Ottawa afforded Terry and I many opportunities to see the lighter side of things.

Six year old Isla has the habit of waking up much too early in the morning, especially these days when sunrise is before 6 am.

"Try to stay in bed til your clock says 7,"her mother reminds her.

"But mommy, my clock doesn't talk."

Taking things literally is what kids do, often with humorous consequences.

I also learned last week that a child's sense of humour develops at a very early age.

When three year old Vivian was about to get her bangs cut off, she quipped,

"Papa, you can get your bangs cut off too."

Touche Vivian!

Spending time with little ones is always renewing for me and reminds me of a few lines from my friend C.S. Lewis who writes,

"If you want joy, power, peace and eternal life, you must get close to, or even into, the thing that has them. They are not the sort of prize which God could, if He chose, just hand out to anyone. They are a great fountain of energy and beauty spurting up at the very centre of reality. If you are close to it, the spray will wet you: if you are not, you will remain dry."

Isla and Vivian, thanks for teaching me how to get wet again.
