GOING GREEN

August is the month of sweet corn, Niagara peaches and local tomatoes. It's also the perfect month to forego burgers and fries in favour of plates of greens.

I've come to realize that eating fresh fruits and vegetables instead of meat and dairy is counter cultural but Terry and I are giving it a try. I've also resurrected my juicer and have stopped eating dairy treats like ice cream.

I suppose the reasons for this initiative are three fold.

First, I've come to understand that one's health is one's responsibility. About a year back, my family doctor prescribed a medication to help with my cholesterol numbers. I didn't give it a second thought. Take a pill and hope the problem goes away. My reliance on a pill absolved me of the responsibility to eat and drink more wisely....a bad mind set on my part.

Secondly, I realize that as a cancer survivor, it is my task to make every effort to give my body the best possible chance to keep the cancer menace away.

And thirdly, reading the book The China Study by T. Colin Campbell and watching the movie What The Health on Netflix have put me on the vegetable and fruit team.

No doubt, I'll fall off the green wagon occasionally but with Terry's example and encouragement, I think I can stick to this healthier way of eating from here on out.
