I've got a new best friend...kale.
Over the past month, Terry and I have made a concerted effort to cut down on meat and dairy and up our quota of leafy greens.
It all began on a visit to Niagara-on- the-Lake and a little shop called The Fruit Shack which specializes in home grown produce and what they tout as world's best butter tarts. We skipped the tarts but we did load up on peaches, corn, kale and tomatoes.
Since then, we've continued to buy local produce on an almost daily basis.
With appointments to my family doctor and my oncologist in the next two weeks, I'm determined to give my body as much help as possible.
Although I really haven't felt much different on our green regime, I'm out jogging / walking for the first time in almost a year. That's my good news.
Now I don't want to get into the debate about the diet. Heaven knows, there are so many books and theories out there.
However, what no book or theorist has ever mentioned is this simple observation.
In every country in the world, the life expectancy of men is shorter than women, often by as many as ten years.
In every country in the world, I suspect that men eat more meat than women.
A coincidence? I think not.
Thus my intent is to stick with kale and cauliflower over bacon and beef for the months to come.
