IT'S CHRISTMAS TIME

A recent e-mail from a thoughtful former student had a special way of brightening my day. He asked about my health which has been amazing these past few months.

In fact, I'm back playing pickleball for the first time in over a year. Although I can't play with my former élan, gearing down my game and my competitiveness has been a good thing. After one recent match, my partner turned to me and said, " You know, you're not bad for a cripple."

Certainly not a politically correct comment but I appreciated it.

In fact, I'm feeling so well that I just might go up to Ottawa this month and let them know I'm free to build that outdoor rink on Parliament Hill for much less than the 5.6 million dollars they've budgeted. Heck, I could probably do it for a few hundred dollars if I could get the city to give me access to their fire hydrants.

At the same time, I could practice my French with some of the locals including Justin and his family. I could also converse in la belle langue with former Brebeuf principal Father Winston Rye SJ who, I have discovered, is taking French lessons these days.. Bravo Père Rye.

Better go now. Time to put up our Christmas tree. Yes, we still do the real tree thing, a little family tradition I can't let go of.

Although an artificial tree may be cleaner, more cost effective and versatile ( have you seen the inverted ones ), it doesn't come with the family memories that a real one rekindles.

Now, now where did I leave that tree stand?
