A few weeks ago, it was brought to my attention that a Brebeuf alumnus, Barry Engelhardt, had just written his second book.
Barry was in the first class I taught at Brebeuf College back in 1972. In fact, he was the class president and much respected for his natural leadership and academic prowess.
He went on to become a family doctor and continues to practice in the Ottawa area.
Barry's latest book is called Musings of a Medical Dinosaur and is based on his thirty five years of experience caring for others.
It is written in a warm, honest, and humble manner and is filled with insights into a myriad of medical issues from vaccinations to cancer treatment, from powers of attorney to managing cholesterol, from back pain to mental health.
It even has a chapter titled Asymptotes. How cool is that!
But much more than that, it is a look at the human condition; what makes us tick, what makes us stumble and more importantly, how to get up again. Indeed, as the author suggests, it is a self-help book that explains how the use of mindfulness and introspection can help us to conquer ourselves.
Finally, it is a deeply spiritual book which tries to make sense of the ball game we call life. If I can paraphrase the author's message using a sports analogy; life is the game we all play, a game each of us brings a unique skill set to, a game where each of us belongs. Though there will be injuries and penalties along the way, the ultimate objective of each player is to use their "gifts and talents to will the good and growth of all the others as others."
I hope you take the time to read this book, all profits of which are being donated to individuals needing help to attend addiction rehabilitation facilities.
Kudos Barry....and keep on loving.
