MY SUNSHINE

A human interest story on Global TV last week warmed my heart and reminded why I volunteer at Holland Bloorview these days. (see link below)

The children's rehab hospital is a place of healing, a place of compassion and a place of joy. On my last visit, I had the privilege to hold and sing lullabies to a two month old baby. The time before that, I interacted with a cheerful five year old who must use his toes to interact with his environment. Another time I used my limited French skills to support a child who had come for therapy from Montreal. And then there was the little boy whose salutation to everyone was, "Hello my new best friend" and the three year old girl who liked to ask, "Can we go to Costco?" whenever she came into the therapeutic playroom and saw the kitchen set replete with plastic fruits and vegetables.

Initially, my heart broke to see the challenges faced by these little ones.  However, over time, I've come to realize that the recuperative powers of youngsters is truly amazing and I'm always delighted when a child has completed rehab and can go home.

These children are an inspiration.

                                                     These children matter.

                                                                                       These children are my sunshine.
