LARRY TWO BOUNCE

Last Saturday, Terry and I were delighted to attend the birthday celebration of our friend Larry who now joins the 70's  club.

With lots of family and friends in attendance at the beautiful home of his daughter and son-in-law, Larry reflected on his cancer journey as he sipped on a non-alcoholic beer.

"I'm still on my daily chemo pill as well as blood thinners and a few other things, but gradually, they're cutting me back."

Although he didn't say it, I know Larry is filled with gratitude for the care and dedication of the doctors and nurses who have brought him much of the way back from his aggressive bone cancer diagnosed last January.

A year ago, Larry was just an acquaintance. In fact, he was my nemesis, our games of pickleball  titanic battles of wills and egos. Today, we've both changed.

Larry seems happier now, his willingness to accept his deficits amazing.

"I'm Larry Two Bounce now," he jokes, referring to the fact his mobility issues make it difficult for him to reach a pickleball on its first hop.

I realize I've changed too. Though I still can't seem to dial back my competitive side, I have learned a lot from Larry's optimism and determination. A positive attitude in the face of one's struggles is a sign of both humility and faith.

Though cancer is a terrible scourge, I know it can and it will be beaten.

Happy Birthday my friend.

You're my inspiration.
