THE GIFT THAT KEPT ON GIVING

One final Christmas story before the last decoration gets put away.

Our son Derek, an elementary school teacher, often passes along a few of the gifts he receives from his students. This year, it was a large box of liqueur filled chocolates that came our way. I didn't have the heart to tell him that neither Terry or I really like them.

Be that as it may, on Christmas morning, a large festive package was sitting on our doorstep, a gift of fancy Christmas decorations from our neighbour Albert and his family who live right across the street. He probably got tired of looking at our shabby display in the front window.

I quickly dressed and reciprocated his kindness by dropping off a large tin of homemade caramel corn (my answer to Christmas cookies) as well as the box of liqueur chocolates.

Why not? I said to myself. Someone must like them.

At the same time, I delivered another tin of caramel corn to Albert's next door neighbours Tim and Ellen, parents of my 11 year old math buddy Chen  Xi.

Two days later, as I was watching Canada at the World Juniors, I heard a knock at the front door.

"Merry Christmas Uncle Mike, Merry Christmas Uncle Mike."

It was Chin Xi.

"Merci bien," I replied. "Joyeux Noel. Did you get my popcorn?"

"I sure did but my dad ate most of it. Now, here's a gift for you and Aunt Terry. Sorry it's a few days late."

"That's wonderful," I replied as he handed me a rectangular package.

"This is a real surprise" I said, tearing off the wrapping paper.

Truer words were never spoken.

You see, it was the very same box of misfit chocolates.

I guess it's ours for good!
