DISHEARTENING NEWS

A few days after getting back from our holiday, I was rocked by news of the scandal involving Jean Vanier.

Without getting into any of its details, suffice it to say that I would agree with those who want schools named after Vanier to find a new patron.

The story demonstrates that temptation is a reality for both saints and sinners. As well, it also reinforces my belief that just as the cross extends both horizontally and vertically, so must our lives.

The horizontal dimension involves our love of neighbor. Though depleting at times, serving others is what makes life so satisfying. The vertical part, the relationship with the Father, is what gives the cross its strength.

I can only hope that the good work that was begun by Jean Vanier at l'Arche continues and flourishes despite this demoralizing setback.
