REASONS TO CELEBRATE

A recent announcement by our provincial leader that some Covid restrictions are finally being lifted  propelled Terry and I in opposite directions this past week.

Terry is with our daughter Carolyn and her two little ones in Barrie while I'm in Ottawa with Janice and her family. Somehow, I found it quite easy to leave the adult world of bridge games and Netflix dramas for a land filled with bike riding, Crazy Eights and Paw Patrol.

It's been over 5 months since I've seen Janice and Kevin's children and I wondered whether their two year old had totally forgotten me entirely: certainly not the case as Adrian jumped up on my knee as soon as he saw me.

This past week has been one of celebration, not only for Adrian's second birthday but also for the end of the school year for his sisters. It was a delight to watch each of them take part in their final class via their virtual classrooms.

I'm beginning to realize that youngsters up to about the age of 7 are thriving under this new normal. Spending quality time with two parents is all that a young child could ask for. However, around the age of 8 or 9, children break out of that parental cocoon and begin to socialize with friends thus making  this extended time of isolation especially hard for them.

Thank goodness 9 year old Isla is able to attend an at-a-distance pool party with a small group of friends this morning.

Tomorrow is Father's Day and another celebration.

Indeed, we all need to celebrate and make those social contacts that bring us out of ourselves and into a world filled with meaningful connections and surprising possibilities.
