GROWING UP IN THE PANDEMIC

Terry and I are with family in Ottawa this week. Always a fun-filled time, I'm amazed how quickly young children change.

Where three months ago, two and a half year old Adrian communicated in monosyllables; today he's speaking in full sentences. "Mommy and daddy read me that book before I sleep," was the phrase he used with my wife when she tried to put him down for a nap the other day."

When I chatted with him about my hair or lack thereof he said, "You have hair. but it's on the sides." Gotta love that kid.

The older girls continue to change quickly too.

Once daunted by the challenge of on-line learning, 7 year old Vivian now has embraced it. In fact, I realize she'll be my go-to person for tech support in the future after she helped give my Google page a new look.

Ten year old Isla has taken time away from all things Harry Potter to take up cooking and baking. Last night it was homemade pizza, this morning it will be pancakes.

It's also fun to watch the girls become more reflective now with conversations ranging from "I hate boys" to "Why don't some people wear masks at the park like they're supposed to?"

Video games are such a part of this young generation's lives. Isla likes to engage me in two person games from a site called Friv. Not my forte. When I explained away my ineptness by telling her we didn't have video games as kids, she gasped, "How did you survive back then?"

We did survive in a black and white world just as these kids are surviving, in fact, thriving in a pandemic world.

Can't wait to see what changes the next three months bring.
