THE BEST GIFT EVER PART 12

Good fortune has brought online bridge friend Fred "Rigby" Barnes my way. In fact, last year, his unexpected Christmas gift was the highlight of my holiday season. Born and raised in the New England area, he shares this special memory thanks to his grandmother's generosity of spirit.

Like most, I have received surprise presents over the years….the unexpected ones are all truly the best. However the most memorable may be the one year (1961) that our entire family on my mothers side got together. We always saw each other over the holidays at some point or another. We lived in different locations across New England.

However this one year, Nana Mason said everyone is coming to her and my grandfather's house in Fall River, Massachusetts. Not as individual families but everyone, under one roof, for this one Christmas. She still wanted the magic of young people, her grandchildren, all together both Christmas Eve and Day. So they we all were, under the roof of her large Victorian home. She pulled out all the stops, decorations everywhere, a large Douglas fir i18 feet tall in the “parlor” off the living room. A large Christmas Eve afternoon party with all her friends (I’m guessing to show off her grandchildren)!  We all got to drink Shirley Temples or Roy Rogers!
The afternoon was topped off with the photo of us all below. All in all it was a magical three days, one never to be forgotten.

Mike….here's the rogue's gallery. My brother Bill at the top, my cousins in the middle and my sister Jane and me on the floor.

Note the mantle decorations behind us; those types of decorations were throughout the house.
