I continue to try to understand the pull of a drug addiction. Words are not enough. But then again, how do you explain a cancer or a disability?
One recovering addict described his addiction this way.
Imagine yourself in a deep pit with no discernible way out. Family and friends offer a hand up but they just don't understand that you are anchored to a murky floor. At times, you don't even realize you're in a pit. At other times, the sense of isolation and despair is overwhelming.
NA provides the twelve steps up and out of that pit. The steps are profound and most recovering addicts agree it takes years before the steps actually make any sense.
Recovering is a process, staying clean a lifelong challenge.
For those at the meetings are who are struggling mightily, the message is simple......
