The Blues Jays beat the Phillies 6-2 today to sweep their three game series. It was a special game, not because of the outcome, but because I got to share my Father’s Day gift at the Rogers Centre with Terry, two of my children, Laura and Derek, son-in-law Chris and two of my grandkids, Noah and Audrey.
Not only did I learn that the Blue Jays have a good bullpen, I discovered that a two year old can eat nachos, a hot dog, some candies and still have room for ice cream.
It was an afternoon full of joy, not unlike my visit with Jacques this morning. Though his body is very frail now and his strength is dissipating, he remains positive and cheerful. He shared some stories about his youth and I soon realized that he was a real trickster in his day.
One of the childhood pranks he pulled off with his brother was shooing about fifty chickens into a pigsty on the family farm.
“What did your dad say when he found out?” I asked.
“Oh, my dad never found out we did it. He thought the chickens had managed to fly over a fence and into the sty by themselves,” Jacques smiled.
“I guess I’ll have to face the music when I soon meet my dad again,” he added playfully.
Jacques’ game is now in the bottom of the ninth. No chance for extra innings. He appreciates the steady support from his coaches and fellow players. He’s certainly not afraid to make the final out because he realizes that right after this game, he’ll be elevated to a higher level where players don’t get injured and no one makes errors. In fact, there’s not even a scorekeeper.
Sounds like a bit of heaven to me.
