Any hopes of being discharged this weekend were dashed by severe bouts of nausea and vomiting that racked his body on Friday and Saturday. At times, he despaired of ever feeling well again.
He is resting much more comfortably now that he has been taken off all food.
When I visited this morning, he was sitting up in bed surrounded by five family members. He called me close to his bedside to show me a treasured possession….a wooden rosary that belonged to his parents.
Jacques now thinks he might be released on Tuesday barring further complications. My fervent wish is that this harrowing hospital leg of his journey will soon be over.
Indeed, he is looking forward to friendly visits from friends once he is on his home turf.
As I left Toronto General, I couldn’t help but notice a huge sign high above University Avenue, a sign of hope and optimism that hangs atop the Princess Margaret Hospital. It reads…..
Believe It.
We will conquer cancer in our lifetime.
I believe.
