THE REAL ESTATE SAINT

My oldest sister is probably the sanest and most knowledgeable person I know.

Need advice about mutual funds, income tax, or financial planning…just ask Yvonne.

How to play a bridge hand, win at mah-jongg, or raise money for a charity…just ask Yvonne.

In fact, under the word maven in Webster’s dictionary is a picture of my sister….at least until a few days ago when she e-mailed to say that she and her husband Mike had just sold their house in Burlington with the help of Saint Anthony.

“We just followed the directions in the ‘Home Selling Kit’ that our agent gave us,” Yvonne explained. “Basically, all you have to do is bury of statue of Saint Joseph upside down on your property and soon thereafter, your house sells.”

And here I thought Saint Joseph was a carpenter, not a realtor.

Upon researching this voodoo-like practice on the internet, I found numerous claims similar to my sister’s about the power of an upended subterranean Saint Joseph. I also read that single women have been known to buy small statues of Saint Anthony and bury them upside down for a week as they attempt to blackmail the lost and found saint into finding them good husbands. Yikes!

I think there’s a fine line between religion and superstition, between faith and folly, a line that my sister may have crossed when she sold her house.

But then again, God does work in mysterious ways.
