Skipping stones across a pond is a learned skill.
As far as my Xena is concerned, it’s a daunting challenge.
However, with my five year old grandson at my side searching for the perfect flat stone, I feel like a Jedi Master as I introduce Noah to the nuances of this simple rite of passage.
“Four, five, six,” he shouts. “That was a good one Papa."
“Your turn, Noah, try this one,” I encourage.
Time comes to a standstill as we share in the wonder of stones dancing on the water’s surface.
Later, as we walk along the shore of Hamilton harbour, Noah surprises me with the fact that he can count to 200.
“Wow, maybe they should put you right into Grade 2 when you start school this week,” I enthuse. “You could skip Grade 1.”
“Oh no, Papa,” Noah replies. “I don’t want to miss Grade 1. I want to learn everything.”
Learning everything is a still a possibility for a five year old. Of course, we all soon realize the truth of the old adage, ‘the more I learn, the less I know,’ but I think I’ll let my grandson discover that one for himself.
Best of luck in Grade 1 Noah. Enjoy!
