My daughter Laura and grandson Elliott share a birthday today.
I think the worst part of this Covid time is not being able to gather for special occasions like this.
However, Laura's husband Chris asked that the family put their best wishes on WhatsApp so that he could put together a surprise montage for her.
Terry and I dressed up in our Sunday best yesterday morning, worked on a fun script, and delivered our special message. By our own reckoning, it was actually quite good.
Then, late last night, our my son-in-law called. He was having trouble with our WhattsApp transmission.
"Could we do it again?' he texted.
"He must be kidding!" I whined. "I'm not getting dressed up at 10 pm."
Undaunted, Terry delivered a simple "Happy Birthday" to see if our new WhatsApp connection was working.
"That's perfect," Chris messaged back. "Now get Mike to do one."
"That's all he wants?" Terry wondered aloud. She seemed embarrassed by the curtness of her greeting.
Next it was my turn.
I tried three times to deliver a sincere message but each time, the app said that my message could not be delivered. Something about our device not supporting the transmission?
Terry and I started laughing at the futility of it all. I had even gone to the bother of donning a fedora for the taping.
At the height of our frivolity, I tried one more time.
"Sorry Laura for the laughing. No, I haven't been drinking. I know you'll never get this but just in case, have a happy ....day."
"Did you forget the word birthday? Terry asked in amazement.
"I did! I did! Wow, did I ever mess that up."
We were cracking up again.
Just then our phone pinged.
"Thanks for the message Mike. Your last try came through."
Yikes!!!!
We're just glad we have an understanding daughter. She's so well aware that she has technology challenged parents.
Have a wonderful birthday Laura.
Love
Mom and Dad
