SAILING INTO THE SUNSET

My thanks to so many of my kind readers who have told me they're praying for my friend Larry.

Against all odds, he's holding his own these days despite having been quarantined in hospital for the past two weeks. Thank goodness for Zoom sessions with his family. Starting tomorrow, he is allowed the same visitor twice a week for a two hours. Better than nothing but it seems draconian to me.

Although still in constant discomfort, Larry passes some of his time playing cribbage on his phone or doing some sketching despite increasing fine motor challenges. Occasionally he's able to get out of bed for a meal.

Most evenings, we chat, sometimes for over an hour. Tonight it was about sailing, one of Larry's passions as a youth when he'd summer at his grandparents' cottage on Balsam Lake. He recounted the joys of sailing regattas when he was a teen and later, an exhilarating experience on a flying Dutchman when he lived in British Columbia.

"Mike, if by some miracle I beat this thing, I want to take you sailing this summer."

I smiled as he spoke.

My heroic friend is still able to dream.
