OF MICE AND THREE KIDS

A friend recently sent a group e-mail asking for some reading suggestions. As he put it, "I'd appreciate any input as I'm starting to read soup can labels these days."

The list I sent Rob included East of Eden by John Steinbeck, a book that prompted this amusing reply.

Enjoy!

"My one and only John Steinbeck story comes when the kids were still under warranty. I had a copy of Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men on the table in our family room when Robby, (the wonder kid vs the wonder why) asked what it was about. I briefly explained the story line and suggested we read it together.

For me, it's a dad's dream to be sitting in a family room reading and discussing a great book with his kid.

The next day, he asked that we continue, but this time Jenna joined us because Robby explained how this guy Lenny was getting a raw deal. I was in heaven.  And then.......

Daniel walked in and asked, "What are you guys doing?"

When I explained to him that we were reading and discussing Of Mice and Men, he said, and I quote, "You know, there's a movie you can just watch", to which the other two replied ,"Now you tell us."

Coulda killed him. A true but sad story."
