THE BEST GIFT EVER

Today marks the first day of Advent, that four week period leading up to Christmas. Last year, many of you shared your Christmas traditions with me, a wonderful look at customs from a wide variety of cultures.

This year, I thought it would be fun to hear about the most memorable gift you ever received either as a child or an adult.

For me, it was a Lionel train set when I was about 7 years old. We lived in a duplex in Montreal and the night before Christmas as I was falling asleep, I could hear my dad shuffling about in the basement. I had no idea what he was up to until the shrill sound of a train whistle got my full attention. In an  instant, the legend of Santa Claus disintegrated for me but no matter, I knew I was getting the toy of my dreams. I really can't imagine how I ever fell asleep that night.

Regrettably, when we made the move to Toronto from Montreal a few years later, the train sadly got sidetracked, never to be seen again. (My mom was a real thrower-outer.)

As an adult, one gift that stands out for both Terry and me came from our daughter Carolyn whose Grade 6 teacher helped her students with a wonderfully ambitious project. On Christmas morning, we were delighted to open a book filled with personal notes from some of our friends who had put into words what our friendship meant to them. It was a very special reminder of just how blessed and how loved we are.

If you have the time, could you please share one of your favorite Christmas gift memories with me and my readers at mjdaoust@hotmail.com

It is such sharing that keep the spirit of Christmas burning bright.

Thank you so much!
