Here's a fun story from Brian Vethanayagam, one of my former students from the class of 2007, who keeps in touch with me on a regular basis. His energy and enthusiasm always makes me smile.
The most memorable gift I've ever received was a remote control fire truck, back when I was in primary school.
Your question generated a nice walk down memory lane, and the gift is memorable for a few reasons:
- I was (and to a degree, still am) obsessed with emergency vehicles.
- I think back then it was for their flashy lights and right-of-way, but in growing up, I am also fond of the greater purpose they serve in society.
- The cost of $59.99 seemed so far out of reach and my parents still made it happen.
- In those days, I frequently visited the Agincourt Mall Wal-Mart with my mother, and scoured the toys and sports section religiously. When I laid my eyes on the fire truck, I knew procuring it would be a bitter negotiation with my mom. I think I threw a tantrum for a few days, and as soon as I'd written it off in my head, my mom delivered the goods. This will forever be my favourite TSN turning point.
- I still have it! 😊
- The most memorable souvenirs of my childhood are my trading cards and this red fire truck.
Thanks for posing the question and soliciting such great responses from the group. I hope the Christmas and holiday season is joyous, warm, and prosperous for you and the family.
Stay well & awesome,
Brian
