Every year I make 'em and most years I break 'em...New Year's resolutions that is.
About six weeks ago, I asked with my card playing buddies if they were planning to make any resolutions for 2022. They looked at me as though I had two heads.
Imagine their further surprise when I shared mine.
"I want to learn to play the harmonica."
Mario and Ermes were very skeptical probably remembering my failed attempt at learning how to juggle a few years ago. Tom, a talented musician on a wide variety of instruments, could only smile.
A few weeks later, while on a boys' getaway at Tom's Kawartha cottage, he surprised me with the gift of a new harmonica.
I was so touched by his thoughtfulness and generosity. In fact, his gift ranks up there with my best ever Christmas presents. I just didn't realize it at the time.
"I think you can do this, Mike," Tom encouraged. "In fact, I can write you out the notes to a few simple tunes to get you started."
I'm really not sure why I've taken on this little project. Perhaps it's because I so envy those who have musical talent.
However, in the light of the book on brain health I mentioned in my last post, I also appreciate that taking up an instrument might just be the creative pastime I need to encourage some neuro-plasticity.
And after all, I can only play so much bridge.
