Although I'm not exactly a devoted soccer fan (how does that offside rule work again?), I've been enjoying watching many of the World Cup matches.
My daughter-in-law is Croatian, and her brother, along with some friends, came to Toronto to watch their team's heartbreaking loss to Portugal. Even their local parish priest joined in the excitement.
My book-editing friend in São Paulo tells me his entire country seemed to come to a standstill whenever Brazil was playing.
There's no doubt that the World Cup, with its expanded format this year, has brought people together in a wonderfully festive way.
As an outsider, my only criticisms of the game are the theatrical injuries that sometimes interrupt its flow and the mysterious timekeeping that leaves fans wondering just how much of a game still remains. How hard would it be to have the scoreboard clock linked to the referee's watch?
With only four teams left in the tournament, I'm looking forward to three more very exciting matches.
And if anyone needs a left-footed player to take a corner kick, I'm available.
